Some Secrets to Texas Holdem Poker

January 28th, 2010 Texas Holdem Poker

These days, it seems that everyone wants to play Texas Holdem. This is a poker game that is a variation of seven card stud. It is easy to understand and very popular in tournaments because up to 10 players can play at a table.

The World Poker Tour and Celebrity Poker Showdown have also helped aid the popularity of Texas Holdem. While poker is a game of chance, there is some skill involved. And unlike casino games in which you are playing against the house, someone has to win. You have better odds of winning if you play Texas Holdem against other players. But your odds are much better if you know some secrets.

One secret to Texas Holdem is to play conservatively. When you are playing poker, you should have a pair or better to stay in the game. In Texas Holdem, seven cards are dealt. Two are pocket cards, which belong only to you and are face down. The other five are community cards. The first three of the community cards are called the flop. If you do not have a pair at the end of the flop, you should fold.

Another secret that you can use when playing Texas Holdem is to read other players. Some players even wear sunglasses so that you cannot read their expressions. Most professional poker players will tell you that it is important to be able to read the expressions in the other players faces. If you are playing online, this is obviously impossible, although if you are playing and there is a chat feature and suddenly someone who is very chatty all of a sudden clams up, you might think that there is something up with their hand.

Be aware what is in the community cards and the variations of what other players may have. Being aware of how other players are betting can give you the edge. If, for example, you have a pair of Jacks and no one is betting heavily and most are folding, you should stay in to see what others may have. If, on the other hand, everyone is betting like crazy, chances are that they have a better hand than you and you should fold.

Another secret is to be aware of the odds of getting certain hands but the fact that although odds may be against someone, they can still get a particular hand. If you have a good hand, such as three of a kind or better, you should stay in at least until the turn, which is the fourth card turned up. You have a good chance of winning a Texas Holdem hand with a three of a kind, so to go out would be foolish.

You should also learn how to bluff. If you have the Jacks, for example, and people are not betting heavily, you can pretend that you might have more in your pocket cards than you have and run others out of the game. Bluffing is a crucial part of poker. Learning how to use this skill will make you a poker champion.
