5 Advantages of Using Clay Poker Chips

December 13th, 2009 Poker Chips

Recently, I had a chat with one of my closest lady friends. She excitedly told me that she has learned to play poker, Texas Hold’em, and that she really enjoyed the experience. Her encounter with poker was from a home game that was set-up by a common friend of ours.

Our conversation went from just a simple “hi” and “hello”, into a very detailed discussion about poker and all the elements that went with it. She also told me that she was amused by the male players who admired the poker chips that they were using for the game and that how a couple of male players debated on the best material for poker chips. I quickly told my naive poker learner that the selection of poker chips for men is just as important and as tough as women choosing the right lipstick or the right shoes to wear.

I also added that because chips are made from three different types of materials (clay, plastic, and metal) it is important to find out the difference among the three. I however, expressed my preference to the clay and clay-composite chips and discussed with her these following advantages:
Clay was the first material to be used in the standard-sized poker chips that casinos were using in the past. However, chips that were made entirely out of clay are considered to be very brittle and thus, very prone to breakage when handled poorly by players. (They often get bent, thrown, and banged on the table by irate players who lost a hand.) Having a set of clay or clay-composite chips will give you the feel of authentic poker chips.Because of modern technology, the clay chip is not really made entirely out of clay. Instead, a very durable plastic (probably the most durable) known as “Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene” or “ABS” is mixed in with the clay to prevent the chip from breaking and from being destroyed easily. The ABS also prevents the scratching and denting of the chips.Another advantage of clay-composite chips is that they weigh more than that of plastics and some metal-based chips. It has been observed that the heavier the chip, the easier it is to handle overall. Clay-composite chips can also be customized in terms of weight by inserting a tiny piece of metal which is built into the chip.Whether you’re a real poker enthusiast or just a collector of poker chips, clay and clay-composite chips have a higher quality look than plastic chips. The colors and designs that are printed or painted on clay-composite chips are brighter and do not dull easily.Probably the greatest advantage of having clay-composite poker chips is that if you’re the only one among your poker buddies who have them, then it will contribute to the overall intimidation that you bring to the poker game with you.

When you are playing your home game ensure you get large enough chip set. I would recommend a 500 poker chip set for those playing small tournaments. If your planning to have cash games a bigger set would ensure you never run out, so try out a 1000 poker chip set.
